hew! The hardest part is past and your treatments are completed. If your breast cancer is now history, you must nevertheless continue to make you follow regularly. The appointment certainly agonizing but necessary.After your treatment, your oncologist will ask you again every 6 months for 5 years, and annually thereafter. These consultations will regularly check that everything goes well on the cancer plan, but also to ensure that you have supported treatment.
What exams?
The monitoring is usually based on a clinical examination and a mammogram, made 6 and 12 months after treatment. Then and up to 5 years, is practiced mostly a clinical examination every 6 months and a mammogram every year, then after that period a clinical examination and a mammogram on an annual basis.
A breast ultrasound can sometimes be associated with mammography and MRI can be used in conjunction, especially in cases where breast lesions are difficult to interpret.
To this surveillance breasts, added achieving an annual chest X-ray. The other tests are not systematic and based on clinical signs (ultrasound liver, bone scan ...).
Finally, in many cancer centers, an annual dosage of antitumor markers (such as CA 15.3 antigen or antibody carcinoembryonnaire) is requested, although these markers are not always specific and that their usefulness is not formally proven.
