Breast Cancer Detecting, Combining The Best Of Medical Imaging

A
lso in the USA, American researchers on the cancer center at the University of Minnesota offered another alternative. Their solution combines the techniques of medical imaging by magnetic resonance (MRI) and a technique of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS).

MRI can locate the tumor masses, while the RS determines the presence and accumulation of a particular molecule in these tissues.

Naturally present in breast tissue, choline accumulates in greater quantity in cancerous tumors as benign tumors. In characterizing its presence in tumors, the diagnosis can theoretically be raised without biopsy.

Tested on 105 women, the technique appears promising. "We hope that it can possibly avoid unnecessary biopsies" testifies Michael Garwood, professor of radiology and lead author of the study.

Although these two techniques are still in preliminary stages, tomorrow they could revolutionize the diagnosis of breast cancer. Recall that the disease will affect nearly one in eight women during their lifetime and almost 42 000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

The more they are detected sooner, the better they are treated. To combat this scourge, the Minister of Health has embarked on widespread screening for breast cancer using mammography to the entire national territory by the end of 2003.
