F
ollowing the tragedy occurred in hospital Jean Monnet Epinal which led to the irradiation of patients, Health Minister Philippe Bas, announced on May 9, 2007 an action plan to strengthen security, vigilance and quality of care.Among the 300 000 new cases of breast cancers that occur in France each year, over 180 000 patients will benefit, at some point in their illness, treatment with radiotherapy alone or in combination with surgery and chemotherapy.
In a release dated May 14, 2007, the National Cancer Institute and the National League against Cancer welcomed the measures announced by the minister who must contribute to strengthening the security of patients treated with radiotherapy.
The National Cancer Institute is a key player in this strategy. Several actions are directly under its responsibility: the labelling of radiotherapy centres, through the drafting of recommendations clinics or preparing documents for information on radiation therapy for doctors but also the general public. The latter document should be released before the end of May.
In addition, the park french radiotherapy equipment and technologies adopted were recently modernized (+12% particle accelerators between 2003 and 2006 and development of high precision techniques can increase the effectiveness of radiotherapy and minimize side effects on the surrounding tissue).
