he radiotherapy are they safe in France ? That is the question that can arise with the recall earlier this week of more than 600 patients exposed to cancer treatment in several hospitals in France. This is the Rangueil Hospital in Toulouse, that all began when Brainlab company, which markets appliances radiotherapy called "stereotactic" (to treat tumors of the brain) used in several hospitals, detects an error calibration ' device.
145 patients were exposed to overdoses between April 2006 and April 2007, including 6 very strongly.
The government then decided to inspect all equipment stereotactic radiotherapy de France Monday, June 11, 2007. And then, this is not a problem of calibration, but a problem of diversion of fire which was discovered in the aircraft Brainlab four hospitals: CAV Nancy hospital Montpellier, Bretonneau University Hospital of Tours and CHU Pitié-Salpétrière in Paris. While diversion is minimal: 1.2 mm. But it can be dangerous when it refers to very specific areas of the brain.
That is why the Ministry of Health has decided to suspend the use of four aircraft concerned and carry out recall of the 600 cancer patients who have gone through these devices radiotherapy.
The aim is to check that the deviation has not caused side effects. In addition, the government has set up a phone number for patients and relatives: 0820 03 33 33.
Do not panic, however: all other devices France have been scrupulously checked and are therefore a priori now completely safe.
