Detecting Breast Cancer Without Biopsy

H
ow do I know if a breast tumor is malignant or benign ? Until now, the diagnosis was based on the biopsy, a technique to remove a piece of the tumor with a needle. Quite unpleasant, this review may soon be replaced by new methods.

When mammography detects an anomaly in the womb, the diagnosis has not been established so far. Depending on the size and location of the defect, the doctor has at its disposal several tests: ultrasound, or puncture aspiration cytology and biopsy. The latter consideration tomorrow could give way to less traumatic techniques.

Many unnecessary biopsies ?

Once a lesion observed in the breast during a mammogram, the doctor must use other forms of investigation for the diagnosis. We must distinguish between benign tumors of cancerous tumours.

A sample of breast tissue located at the suspicious area is necessary. It can be a drain cytology (aspiration of liquid) or more generally a biopsy. This is a sampling of a portion of the tumor, which will be examined under a microscope.

Fortunately, 60 to 80% of these results confirm the benign nature of the tumour. But as pointed out Dr Emmanuel Barranger of gynaecology and obstetrics department of the hospital Tenon (Paris), not to talk to as many unnecessary biopsies :

"All professionals now work for 60 to 80% of patients operated on be a good reason for therapeutic : a diagnosis of breast cancer. Thus, contrary to what is sometimes a biopsy on a benign tumor is not superfluous because it has avoided unnecessary surgery. "

To improve the convenience of patients and make less traumatic examination, avenues of research are now very promising.
